11:01 pm - And speaking of history...
We just got home from an Al Stewart concert at the Aladdin. I mention history not because the man's been doing this for over forty years, but because he's the kind of guy who says "Y'know, there just aren't enough pop songs about Carthage" and then writes some.

The opening act for these first few shows of the tour was a Liverpudlian pair, Steve Revere and Gabby Young. David said "Steve looks like Paul and John, he has that Liverpool face." He stayed mostly in the background, or maybe Gabby just grabbed my attention. She's young, all elbows, with long Barbie-pink hair, bare feet, and a tight black cocktail dress that gave her an intriguing from-the-knees-down dance step. Oh, and large gauzy moths in her hair. The songs were as quirky as her ensemble but oh, lovely voice!

Al surprised me throughout the show with various imitations, spot-on despite having such a distinctive voice himself. Buddy Holly, Bob Dylan -- lots of Dylan, he talked about how when he was fifteen he'd learned all four chords and the two dozen words that made up rock & roll music, and then just as he left school Dylan and the Beatles came along and knocked that into a cocked hat, moved all the goalposts on him.... He said Well, if there are going to be actual lyrics in this stuff, then I'll write lyrics by god! and hasn't stopped since.

Janis Ian is going to be at the Aladdin next week Friday. Now I'm regretting that we didn't get tickets, but we opted to go up to Foolscap instead.

I have two responses to this. The first is: EXCELLENT CHOICE! :-) And I will continue to reinforce that decision as often as I can. (I am selfish and I want you both here.)

The second is: Well, we know Janice Ian's a science fiction person. Invite her to come along!

I just got to hear Al Stewart's "Roads to Moscow" for the first time over the weekend and was blown away. Truly epic and now that that you've let us know he's touring ........
